Behind a gas station just down the street from City Hall there’s an archway leading into the side of a hill. Klein Berlin is part of the air raid tunnel system for Triestine citizens, but used mostly by the Nazi forces occupying the nearby City Hall. The tunnel system is open to the public every last Friday of the month under the guidance of the Triestine Alpine Club that guides visitors and provides a fascinating lecture.
The tunnels are lined with artifacts found inside and left by both German soldiers and Triestine locals — books, toys, chairs — remnants & reminders of how time was spent in the shelter away from the bombs.

Dietro la stazione di servizio in Via Fabio Severo, a un passo dal Municipio, vi e’ l’entrata di “Kleine Berlin”, il “tunnel” anti-bombardamenti usato principalmente durante la guerra dai Nazisti che usavano il Municipio come quartiere generale. Kleine Berlin e’aperta al pubblico ogni ultimo venerdì del mese, sotto la guida del Club Alpino Triestino che fornisce un tour con spiegazioni molto interessanti.
Le gallerie sono piene di reperti trovati nel tunnel, lasciati da entrambi i soldati tedeschi e locali triestini – libri, giocattoli, sedie – resti e ricordi di come il tempo fu passato al riparo dalle bombe.
