Opened in 1890 under the name “Bagno Lanterna” due to its proximity to the lighthouse, it was quickly nicknamed “El Pedocín” (the tiny flea) by the locals. Some say it is slang referring to the mussels that grow in abundance in the area, others say that when merchant ships would come to port, the sailors would bathe there to rid themselves of lice (“pidocchi”).  However, it owes its fame to the fact that it is the last beach in Europe that has separate bathing areas for men and women. Open year round for “light therapy” (triestines are famous for their love of sun, sea and tanning) it is always easy to gain access for a glimpse into the famous “wall”. In 2016, El Pedocín was the subject of a documentary  called “The Last Beach”presented at the Cannes Film Festival.

Inaugurato nel 1903 con il nome di “Bagno Lanterna”, grazie alla sua vicinanza al faro , è stato poi soprannominato “El Pedocín” ( la piccola pulce ) dai triestini . Alcuni dicono che è gergo che il nome faccia riferimento alle cozze che venivano coltivate in abbondanza nella zona , altri dicono che il nome provenga dal fatto che i marinai, arrivati sulle navi mercantili si sarebbero recati al bagno per sbarazzarsi dei pidocchi . Ma la ragione della sua fama e’ dovuta al fatto che e’ rimasta  l’ultima spiaggia in Europa divisa in zone di balneazione separate per uomini e donne. Aperto tutto l’anno per “elioterapia ” ( i triestini sono famosi per il loro amore di sole, mare e abbronzatura ) è sempre facile rubare un’occhiata e foto  del famoso “muro”. El Pedocín e’ soggetto di un documentario, “L’Ultima Spiaggia”  presentato a Cannes nel 2016.
