“Honor, Reflection, Enterprise and Perseverance” are the words that greet you when you ascend the stairs to the sumptuous apartments of Baron Revoltella. The Museum is the convergence of the Baron’s city home and the Modern Art Museum which began with his private collection and grew thanks to the enormous financial gift he bequeathed Trieste upon his death.

Pasquale Revoltella came to Trieste as a child and as a young man quickly rose to success thanks to his indomitable entrepreneurial spirit and, with his strong connections with the Viennese nobility, including Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg, Revoltella soon became a respected financier and importer.

His main venture was in facilitating the opening of the Suez Canal which he felt would greatly benefit the Triestine shipping economy and he was eventually named VP of the Universal Company of the Suez Canal and later conferred the title of Baron.  When visiting the apartments, look for 2 little spyholes that Revoltella had installed so he could see the goings on in the Port and on the Main Street below.

The Modern Art Museum has on permanent display about 350 paintings and sculptures, primarily works of Italian artists from the second half of the 19th century (third floor), the works acquired in the early decades of the 20th century (fourth floor), the works of artists from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region (fifth floor) and important Italian artists (sixth floor) from the second half of the 20th century. Make sure you go on the rooftop terraces to enjoy gorgeous views of the City!

Not to be missed is his country home in the Carso on the Collina del Cacciatore (The Hunter’s Hill) not far from town, La Villa Revoltella, a Swiss chalet inspired home with vast gardens and beautiful views.

“Onore, Riflessione, Intraprendenza e Perseveranza” sono le parole che ti accolgono quando si sale le scale per arrivare nei sontuosi appartamenti del barone Revoltella. Il Museo è la convergenza della casa di citta’ del barone e il Museo d’Arte Moderna, che ha avuto inizio con la sua collezione privata ed è cresciuta grazie all’enorme dono finanziario lasciato in eredità a Trieste dopo la sua morte. Pasquale Revoltella è venuto a Trieste da bambino e da giovane ottenne rapidamente successo grazie al suo spirito imprenditoriale indomabile e i suoi forti legami con la nobiltà viennese, tra cui l’arciduca Massimiliano d’Asburgo, Revoltella divenne ben presto un rispettato finanziere e importatore .

La sua impresa principale è stato nel facilitare l’apertura del canale di Suez, che lui sentiva sarebbe di grande beneficio all’economia di Trieste ed in seguito è stato nominato VP della Compagnia Universale del Canale di Suez e gli ed eventualemente gli e’ stato conferito il titolo di Barone. Quando si visita gli appartamenti, cercate 2 piccoli spioncini che Revoltella aveva installato in modo da poter vedere quello che succede nel porto e sulla strada principale sottostante.

Il Museo d’Arte Moderna ha in mostra permanente circa 350 dipinti e sculture, opere prevalentemente di artisti italiani della seconda metà del 19° secolo (terzo piano), le opere acquisite nei primi decenni del 20° secolo (quarto piano), le opere di artisti della regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia (quinto piano) e importanti artisti italiani (sesto piano) della seconda metà del 20° secolo. Mi raccomando – uscite sulla terrazza all’ultimo piano per godervi viste meravigliose della citta’.

Da non perdere è la sua casa di campagna nel Carso sulla Collina del Cacciatore non lontano dalla città — La Villa Revoltella, una casa ispirata da chalet svizzero con ampi giardini e una bella vista.
