A mere 20 minutes from downtown Trieste is the Slovenian port-city of Koper or Capodistria. It has many attractions; good restaurants, a gracious historic downtown lined with lovely shops, nice shopping malls and even a very well-regarded university. But the real reason we enjoy going is the foreign language movie policy.

In Slovenia, most films are screened in original language, so that Fast& the Furious 8 will screen in English with Slovenian subtitles, the French film, Chacun Sa Vie will be in French with Slovenian subtitles and so on. However, there is a catch — any dialogue in the film that is in a 3rd language will be subtitled in Slovenian and not your language. We discovered this when we went to see THE REVENANT and we missed all the dialogue in Arikara (a Native American language) because the subtitles were in Slovenian. So, for example, in the Oscar nominated movie LION, the first half of the movie is in Hindi, the subtitles for it are not in English but in Slovenian, which needless to say, posed some major comprehension difficulties.

Knowing this, we have become very adept in evaluating which English language films to go see and which to wait to watch later, on our “on-demand” service. For instance, we decided not to see the sci-fi film, ARRIVAL, because we thought that if there was going to be a lot of  dialogue exchanged with the Aliens, we would not have been able to follow the storyline.

We often go to Koper to the PLANET TUS Shopping Center which houses the Cineplexx. It is very well maintained, clean and comfortable.  The staff is always very helpful and accommodating and they all speak fluent Slovenian, English and Italian (and probably more!). The seating is assigned on request  — favored seating by the locals is from row 9 and up, while we prefer sitting between rows 6 and 8 — The default for the ticket-agent is to assign center seats, so if you prefer an aisle or something else you need to request it.

The popcorn is always fresh and they offer “economy bundles” at the concession stand. There are a wide variety of hot and cold snack options, candy, ice-cream and drinks. Beer and wine are also available.

Base tickets cost E.6.20 — less than in Trieste, where tickets cost E.8.30.  You can see Planet Tus pricing here  (I have yet to discover what the extra E. 1.00 charge for “seating for lovers” is….)!! Parking is free. There is also a “Cineplexx club” card that you can sign up for that offers discounts on snacks and occasionally, free movie tickets.

So whilst I can watch foreign films dubbed into Italian, and I acknowledge the Italians’ prowess in dubbing, I prefer to watch in original language and at Koper’s PLANET TUS, we can do just that!

A soli 20 minuti dal centro di Trieste vi è la città portuale slovena di Koper  o Capodistria. Offre molte attrazioni; buoni ristoranti, un centro storico grazioso pieno di negozi carini, bei centri commerciali  e persino un’università molto ben quotata. Ma la ragione per cui ci piace andare è per vedere film in lingua originale.

In slovenia, la maggior parte dei film sono proiettati in lingua originale,  cosi’ che Fast & Furious 8 viene proiettato in inglese con sottotitoli sloveni,  il film francese, Chacun Sa Vie in francese con sottotitoli sloveni e così via. Tuttavia, dovete tener conto che se nel film ci sara’ una terza lingua straniera, quella sarà sottotitolato in lingua slovena e non nella lingua di tua preferenza. Abbiamo scoperto questo quando siamo andati a vedere Redivivo e non abbiamo potuto sequire tutti i dialoghi in Arikara (un linguaggio degli Indiani Americani) perché i sottotitoli erano in sloveno. Così, per esempio, nel film LION (candidato quest’anno all’Oscar), la prima metà del film era in Hindi, con i sottotitoli tutti in sloveno, che, ha comportato qualche difficoltà di comprensione.

Sapendo questo, ora siamo diventati molto abili nel valutare quali film in lingua inglese andare a vedere e quali aspettare di vedere sul servizio “on-demand” in TV. Per esempio, abbiamo deciso di non vedere il film di fantascienza, ARRIVAL, perché abbiamo pensato che se ci sarebbe stato molto dialogo con gli alieni e che quindi non saremmo stati in grado di seguire la trama.

E cosi’ noi spesso andiamo a Capodistria  dove c’è il Centro Commerciale PLANET TUS che ospita il Cineplexx. Il Cinema e’ tenuto molto bene, pulito ed e’ molto confortevole. Il personale è sempre molto disponibile e parlano tutti perfettamente anche l’inglese e l’italiano. I posti a sedere vengono assegnati su richiesta – in genere i locali  preferiscono sedersi dala fila 9 in su, mentre noi preferiamo le file tra il 6 e 8. Automaticamente, ti vendono posti al centro, ma se si preferisce corridoio o un’altra cosa è necessario richiederlo.

Il popcorn è sempre fresco e croccante e offrono vari “pacchetti” bibite e snack economici. C’è una grande varietà di spuntini caldi o freddi, caramelle, gelati e bevande. Birra e vino sono anche disponibili.

Biglietti di base costano  E.6.20 – meno che a Trieste, dove i biglietti costano E.8.30. È possibile visualizzare i prezzi qui , (devo ancora scoprire cosa comporta esattamente  il costo di E. 1.00 in piu’ per “posti a sedere per gli amanti” …. )!!  Il parcheggio è gratuito. C’è anche una carta “Cineplexx club” che si può richiedere che offre sconti su spuntini e, occasionalmente, anche biglietti cinema gratuiti.

Nonostante possiamo che si possono vedere film stranieri ben doppiati in italiano, e riconosco la bravura degli italiani nel doppiaggio, preferisco guardare i miei film americani in lingua originale e al PLANET TUS di Capodistria, possiamo fare proprio questo!

(nb. chiedere se i film per bambini sono in lingua originale – spesso non lo sono per facilitare i bambini piccoli)
