With Summer options limited, now might be the perfect time to consider joining the The Trieste Golf Club. It is the oldest golf course in the FVG Region and was designed and originally built as a 9-hole course by the Allied Troops immediately after the end of World War II in 1954, it was extended to an 18-hole course in 2005, when the club celebrated its 50th anniversary.
At an altitude of 350m, this challenging course has the rugged Karst landscape on one side and on the other, the Gulf of Trieste with breathtaking views spanning from Grado and Lignano to the coast of Istria. The 17th hole is particularly stunning; the tee box is nestled in a wooded glen and heads straight out into the horizon giving you the sense of being suspended over the sea.
What better way to escape the city and soak in the natural surroundings while at the same time getting a great workout and enjoying a challenging, fun and perfectly socially distanced sport?
The Club pays careful attention to maintaining the natural beauty of the area and whether you are playing or just walking the course, you can enjoy the rich flora and fauna of the region year round. Your olfactory senses are stimulated by perfume of the wild flowers, spontaneous herbs and flowering trees that cover the course. Wild thyme grows in thick purple patches, sweet pea, pink allium, hyacinths and wild irises mingle with the heady perfume of elderberry flowers and flowering ash. Hedges of smoky sumac line the perimeter in shades of bright green, yellow, purple and rust. magenta colored thistle and blue sea holly dot the course. Throughout the year, the lansdscape offers a riot of colors that never cease to dazzle.
Wild hare, deer, birds and seemingly endless varieties of blue, orange, yellow, striped, polka-dotted butterflies are regular inhabitants of the course.
While the course is challenging, it was carefully crafted to be suitable for all levels of players. In fact, the Club prides itself on its Youth Programs and passes down the Golfing tradition amongst its youngest members.
The entire course is 5810 meters for a par 70. It perfectly situated on the rugged hills of the karst plateau, the fairways are bordered by Mediterranean oaks and pines. Whilst at first glance it is not intimidating, the narrow fairways are unforgiving and technique, precision and concentration are essential.
The club enjoys a rich international social life with over 300 members from Trieste, Austria, the US, Slovenia and even Sweden. There is a women’s league “The Pinks” and a men’s league “The Istrians”. There are approximately 52 tournaments throughout the year from 9-hole matches to 18-hole challenges. The Youth group is growing with new courses offered to the littlest golfers to a teen team that is quickly garnering a fierce reputation in the region.
