A favorite of Triestines and tourists alike, the grande dame of Trieste is the Caffe’ degli Specchi. Opened in 1839, it took it’s name from the many etched mirrored panels depicting important events in history that adorned its interior walls. Only a few of the originals are left. Also famous as a favorite haunt of the writers Svevo, Joyce and Kafka (although it seems these gents frequented nearly every bar in Trieste). The beauty of “Specchi” is it’s location, right on the Piazza dell’Unita’ with sea views and lots of sunshine. But it’s also pleasant to go treat yourself with one of the  67 versions of triestine coffee when the weather is grey and chilly and you can snuggle under a trademark red blanket on the outside divans. Make sure you come away with the coffee poster!!

Amato dai triestini e turisti , la “grande dame” di Trieste è il Caffe’ degli Specchi . Inaugurato nel 1839 , ha preso il suo nome dai numerosi  specchi incisi raffiguranti di eventi importanti nella storia che adornavano le sue pareti interne . Solo alcuni degli originali sono rimasti . Famosa anche come un ritrovo preferito degli scrittori Svevo , Joyce e Kafka (anche se sembra che questi signori frequentato quasi tutti i bar di Trieste) . La bellezza di ” Specchi ” è la sua posizione , proprio sulla Piazza dell’Unità ‘ con vista sul mare e sempre solleggiato. Ma è anche piacevole andare quando il tempo è grigio e freddo e mettersi sotto una delle loro famose coperte rosse sui divani esterni e concedervi con una delle 67 versioni di caffè triestini. Non dimenticate di comprarvi un poster dei “Caffe’ A Trieste”!!
