The Mercato Ortofrutticolo of Trieste is the wholesale fresh produce market which, from 9-10am Tuesday through Saturday is open to the public. By that time, the larger stores, resturants and small vendors have picked up their orders and what is left can be sold to the public. You are required to buy by the case so this is like the Costco of fresh produce — the savings is enormous but you need to plan with a friend or two to divide the spoils of your shopping. The scent of fresh clementines and other produce are enough to entice you to think you’ll be able to finish off a case by yourself but trust me. – unless you have a large family, there is A LOT in a case! In addition to produce you will find all kinds of nuts as well.

For now, the market is in Trieste proper near the old Train Station and the Marina “la Sacchetta” at the end of the Rive. The City’s current mayor is planning to relocate it to San Dorligo della Valle (near Muggia) to make room for more retail and a Hotel and Spa — even so, it will still be a worthwhile trip!

Il Mercato Ortofrutticolo di Trieste è un mercato all’ingrosso che, dalle 9-10 am dal Martedì al Sabato è aperto al pubblico. A quell’ora, i grandi negozi alimentari, ristoranti  e piccoli venditori hanno gia’ ritirato i loro ordini e ciò che rimane può essere venduto al pubblico. Dato che si puo’ solo acquistare per cassetta (e per questo e’ molto conveniente dal punto di vista economico, e’ comunque  necessario pianificare con un amico o due per dividere il bottino di vostro shopping. Il profumo di clementine fresche e altri prodotti sono sufficienti per invogliare a pensare che sarete in grado di finire una cassettina intera da soli, ma fidatevi – a meno che non avete una grande famiglia, una cassettina e’ grande! Oltre a . Il mercato è a Trieste nei pressi della vecchia stazione ferroviaria alla fine della Rive. L’attuale sindaco della città ha recentemente annuciato che ha in programma di trasferirlo a San Dorligo della Valle (vicino a Muggia) per fare spazio ad un futuro albergo e centro “Wellness” — anche se questo si avverra’ rimane comunque un viaggio che vale la pena!
