Trieste is not the kind of town where people, between conference calls, rush out for a quick bite at lunchtime. However, it does have a “Fast-food” restaurant quite unlike the kinds we’re used to, that place is Genuino. Located in the Old Jewish Ghetto behind Piazza della Borsa, the name means “genuine” and that refers to the ingredients and products they use — all natural, all local (referred to in Italian as “Kilometro 0”). Everything in their restaurant is biodegradable, from the glasses to the utensils, even the furnishings are up-cycled. Their menu is born out of a meticulous study done with the Department of Nutrition at the University of Udine. At this fast food you won’t find anything fried, no red meat, the drinks have no artificial coloring and only natural carbonation, and they carry local artisanal beer. What you will find are delicious flavorful hamburgers made with chicken & turkey meat and amazing homemade and healthy “Secret sauces”, hearty and healthy soups, Wraps, Salads, Rice Bowls and hot platters…and starch lovers, you can enjoy lovely oven-roasted potatoes. You can eat quickly, take it to go or savor your meal, as most Triestines do all the while feeling good about your waistline and carbon footprint!

Trieste non è proprio il tipo di città in cui le persone, tra una chiamate di lavoro e l’altra, si precipitano fuori per uno spuntino veloce a pranzo. Tuttavia, si ha un ristorante “fast-food” molto diverso da quelli a cui siamo abituati, che si chiama Genuino. Si trova nel vecchio Ghetto ebraico dietro Piazza della Borsa, e il nome si riferisce agli ingredienti e prodotti che utilizzano – tutto naturale e tutto locale (a”Kilometro 0″). Inoltre, tutto nel ristorante è biodegradabile, dai bicchieri alle posate — addirittura anche gli arredi sono reclicati. La loro filosofia e il loro menu nascono da uno studio meticoloso fatto con il Dipartimento di Alimentazione presso l’Università di Udine. A questo fast food non troverete nulla di fritto, niente carne rossa, e fra le bibite vi sono le gassose naturali senza coloranti oppure birre artigianali locali. Cosa si può trovare a Genuino sono deliziosi e saporiti hamburger a base di pollo e carne di tacchino e ottime “salse”sane fatte in casa, zuppe, rotoli (stile piadine), insalate, ciotole di riso e piatti caldi … e per gli amanti di amido, si possono mangiare le patate forno. Qui si può mangiare in fretta, prendere per asporto oppure accomodarvi e gustare il vostro pasto, come fanno la maggior parte dei triestini, senza preoccuparvi troppo della dieta or della vostra impronte carbonica!
