Rovinj in Croatia (or Rovigno, the Italian name for the city) is called the “The Blue Pearl of the Adriatic” and is a mere 90 minutes from Trieste. Starting from the marketplace near the Cruise port below, one walks up a swirl of ancient streets (with alleys that reveal blue swaths of sea) leading up to the square in front of the Church of Saint Euphemia. Then descending  down the other side, is the city port which is lined with the freshest of seafood restaurants. The main source of attraction is the quaintness of the town itself and it’s residents who are mostly fishermen, artists and artisans and, of course, the beckoning azure sea. You can charter a boat to explore some of the 14 archipelago islands just off the mainland, the more famous ones being Sveta (St.) Katarina, Sveti Andrija e Crveni Otok, or “Red Island”.  For Nature lovers, there is Punta Corrente Arboretum with its rich collection of local and foreign tree specimens lined with walkways and cycling paths.  The coastline of the park  itself is dotted with inviting little beaches.
There are numerous accommodation options in town ranging from private rooms, apartments and bungalows, to camping sites and 2 – 4 star hotels. The city also has two luxury, 5-star boutique hotels, Hotel Monte Mulini and Hotel Lone. Apart from hotels on the mainland, there are also a handful of hotels on small islands surrounding Rovinj/Rovigno which are linked to the mainland by boats. Although the high season is from May to September, it’s a perfect day-trip from Trieste any time of year. If you go in the Spring you should stop at the roadside stands and buy the wild asparagus which are a little bitter but delicious and typical of the region. In the Fall, these same roadside stands carry fresh truffles. These are without a doubt the best souvenirs to pick up!

Rovinj in Croazia (o Rovigno) si chiama “La Perla Blu dell’Adriatico” ed è a soli 90 minuti da Trieste.  Partendo dal Mercato la città è un vortice di antiche stradine che portano  in alto alla piazza di fronte alla Chiesa di Santa Eufemia. D’altro lato dell’isola vi è il porto che è pieno di buon ristoranti di pesce.  Il fascino di Rovigno è la città stessa che e’ graziosa ed invitante — con i suoi pescatori, artisti e artigiani, e naturalmente, il bellissimo mare. È possibile noleggiare barche per esplorare le isole dell’arcipelago difronte a Rovigno (14 in tutto) – fra le piu’ famose vi sono Sveta Katarina, Sveti Andrija e Crveni Otok, o “Isola Rossa”. Per gli amanti del verde, c’e’ il Parco Forestale Punta Corrente che e’ piena di alberi indigeni e campioni di specie straniere. Il parco e’ molto ben curato e vi sono piste ciclabili e passeggiate in mezzo al verde. Inoltre sulla costa del parco vi sono varie spiaggiette invitanti. Rovigno offre molte opzioni per turisti, anche per il pernottamento si trova di tutto da stanze singole, appartamenti, bungalows, bed & breakfast  e alberghi da 2 a 5 stelle. Vi sono anche pensioni su alcune delle isolette che si collegano con la citta’ con navette. Anche se l’alta stagione è da maggio a settembre, da Trieste e’ una perfetta meta per una gita in giornata in qualsiasi periodo dell’anno. In primavera fermatevi alle bancarelle lungo la strada e acquistate gli asparagi selvatici, che sono un po ‘amari, ma deliziosi e tipici della regione. In autunno, queste stesse bancarelle vendono tartufi freschi. Questi sono senza dubbio i migliori souvenir da comprare!
