Designed in 1953 by the architectural firm of Banfi Belgiojoso Peressutti & Rogers as a service station for Aquila Gas, Stazione Rogers is one of the few examples in Italy of a salvaged gas station. After existing in a state of abandonment and neglect for many years, in 2008, the city of Trieste held a contest for finding a new use for the space. The firm of Semerani & Tamaro Architects proposed a restoration project that re-imagined it as a cultural center.
The name Rogers is in honor of it’s designer Ernesto Nathan (E.N.) Rogers– the “R” of the BBPR firm. Like Trieste itself, E.N. was multicultural, the son of a British father and an Italian mother of Jewish faith. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, he and a few of his classmates Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti e Gian Luigi Banfi formed the architecture firm BBPR in 1932. In 1939 he was forced to seek refuge in Switzerland when Trieste fell under Fascist rule, but returned in 1945. After the war, he continued to have an active, leadership role in the firm but also found the time to establish several groundbreaking architecture magazines, DOMUS & CASABELLA — he also returned to the Politecnico as a professor until his death in 1969.
Today Stazione Rogers is in the business of distributing ideas, culture & music instead of gas. It is a meeting point that offers space for art exhibits, screenings, conferences and performances. It has a large outdoor space where, as soon as weather permits, becomes an open-air concert space with cafe style seating, bar service serving small plates.

Progettato nel 1953 dallo studio di architettura BBPR, come una stazione di servizio per Aquila Gas, Stazione Rogers è uno dei pochi esempi in Italia di una stazione di servizio “recuperata”. Dopo anni in stato di abbandono, nel 2008 la città di Trieste ha tenuto un concorso per riqualificare la palazzina. La ditta di Semerani & Tamaro Architetti Associati ha vinto il concorso ri-immaginandol il piccolo distributore come un centro culturale.
Il nome di Rogers è in onore del architetto Ernesto Nathan (E.N.) Rogers — la “R” della ditta BBPR. Come Trieste stessa, E.N. era multiculturale, figlio di un padre inglese e madre italiana di fede ebraica. Diplomato al Politecnico di Milano, lui insieme ad alcuni compagni di classe — Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti e Gian Luigi Banfi — formarono lo studio di architettura BBPR nel 1932. Nel 1939 Rogers fu’ costretto a rifugiarsi in Svizzera, quando Trieste passo’ in mano al governo fascista, ma poi rientro’ nel 1945. Dopo la guerra, Rogers continuo’ ad avere un ruolo attivo nella società, ma trovo’ anche il tempo per creare diverse riviste di architettura innovative, DOMUS e CASABELLA, e torno’ anche al Politecnico come professore fino alla sua morte nel 1969.
Oggi Stazione Rogers è un “distributore” di idee, cultura e musica anziche’ benzina. Si tratta di un punto di incontro che offre spazio per mostre d’arte, proiezioni, conferenze e spettacoli. Ha anche un ampio spazio esterno dove, appena il clima consente, si tengono concerti all’aperto. Stazione Rogers e’ anche un punto di ristoro con una ricca offerta di vini, cocktails, toasts e tapas.
A Stazione Rogers vi sono sempre appuntamenti interessanti, “off-beat” e culturalmente lungimirante. E ‘un posto per godersi lo spirito innovativo di Trieste.
